Communications Internship

COMMUNICATIONS INTERNSHIP

Providence, RI

The Economic Progress Institute (EPI) is seeking a Communications Intern — focusing primarily on graphic design and social media — to help us direct effective messages to our many audiences about equity, tax justice, affordable healthcare, quality childcare, worker justice, economic opportunity, and other organizational priorities. The Communications Intern will report to our Communications Manager and support the full EPI Team.

EPI’s mission is to lead transformational and equitable budget and policy changes in Rhode Island through research, analysis, education, and advocacy toward racial and economic justice for low- and-modest income Rhode Islanders.

The Communications Intern will help EPI build consensus and secure support for policies resulting in meaningful, consistent investments being made in people, providing a robust foundation for all Rhode Islanders to thrive. The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent writing and design skills, collaborative ability, creativity, and self-direction. Experience with graphic design software (ex: InDesign, Canva), social media, and research are essential.

Responsibilities

  • Design and lay out reports, factsheets, and visuals for email campaigns, website, and social media (BlueSky, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X/Twitter)
  • Ensure brand consistency across all platforms
  • Edit photos and simple videos for digital use
  • Collaborate with EPI staff on creative projects, from brainstorming to incorporating feedback
  • Support the Communications Manager with scheduling, posting, and monitoring social media content; respond to engagement and analyze performance metrics
  • Represent EPI at community fairs and public events

Qualifications

  • Proficiency with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or other design tools
  • Familiarity with social media trends and best practices
  • Strong visual storytelling and concise writing skills
  • Ability to translate complex policy issues into accessible language
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and able to work independently with guidance
  • Comfortable engaging diverse audiences and building relationships
  • Experience creating short, engaging videos for TikTok or other platforms is a plus
  • Access to a vehicle preferred for attending statewide events
  • Commitment to EPI’s core values: integrity, equity, excellence, and active democracy

Start Date: Preferably May or June 2025.

Hours: Flexible 10-15 hours per week, Monday-Friday, with occasional evening work. EPI operates on a hybrid, in-office and remote work schedule. The ability to work some hours in the office every week is ideal. Preference will be given to interns who can commit to at least two semesters.

Compensation: EPI offers $18 per hour for students who are unable to receive college credit or a stipend through their school.
