About

Kevin McElroy joined the Economic Progress Institute Board in October 2024.

Coming from a background in social work and community organizing, Kevin is the Health and Safety Program Coordinator at the Institute for Labor Studies and Research (ILSR). Since 1980, this worker-centered non-profit organization has empowered the labor movement to have a stronger voice in the workplace and helped build an educated, competitive workforce benefiting all workers in Rhode Island. Through an array of programs, trainings, and services, ILSR helps more than 8,000 Rhode Islanders every year.

With collaboration from various stakeholders, Kevin provides and delivers occupational health and safety, rights on the job, workers’ compensation insurance information, and workplace sexual harassment training to both youth and adult workers and students. Also, he is an elected officer for OPEIU Local 25. Prior to this current position, Kevin was field representative for the Rhode Island Alliance of Social Service Employees, SEIU 580. During his time at 580, Kevin served as a liaison between members and leadership, assisted union officers and their roles, resolved member and election staffing issues, and assisted in organizing members in attending various union events and activities.

Committed to giving back to the community, Kevin serves on three other boards: the Rhode Island Committee on Occupational Safety and Health, Occupational and Environmental Health Center of RI and The Rhode Island Labor History Society.
