Weayonnoh Nelson-Davies Statement in Response to Governor McKee’s Goal to Increase Per Capita Income

Tuesday, January 16, 2024

PROVIDENCE, RI Weayonnoh Nelson-Davies, Executive Director of the Economic Progress Institute made the following statement today in response to Governor McKee’s goal of increasing the per capita income of Rhode Islanders.

"Tonight Governor McKee introduced his plan to ease the financial burdens many Rhode Islanders face by setting a goal to raise per capita income by 2030," said Weayonnoh Nelson-Davies, Executive Director of the Economic Progress Institute. "We look forward to working with the Governor to achieve equitable income gains and ensure that the poorest families, as well as middle-income, low-wage, and care economy workers all see their incomes increase. Most Rhode Islanders continue to struggle to meet their basic needs. Investing in childcare assistance, affordable housing, cash assistance, and paid family leave will help ease financial burdens and raise the standard of living in our state, particularly for the most vulnerable. Other investments, like baby bonds, will improve the standard of living for low-income Rhode Islanders and increase equity in the long-term by reducing the racial wealth gap."

The Economic Progress Institute is a non-partisan research and policy organization that works to ensure the economic security of low- and modest-income Rhode Islanders. To learn more about The Economic Progress Institute, visit economicprogressri.org.
