The enactment of the State of Rhode Island’s Fiscal Year 2026 budget is approaching its final stages in the Rhode Island General Assembly. With a budget gap of around $250 million that must be closed, legislative leaders have much work to do as they negotiate the budget’s final terms.
However, the enactment of the state budget is not happening in a vacuum. The federal budget reconciliation process is moving at full speed and if passed, will strip healthcare and food assistance away from millions of people while showering ever-larger tax breaks on the wealthiest households. This, too, will demand a state response.
Join us for a lively discussion on these challenges led by Economic Progress Institute (EPI) Director of Research and Fiscal Policy Alan Krinsky.
Alan will dive deep into the major issues at stake and address some of the myths put forth on the tax-the-top-1% legislation, including pass-through income and small businesses. As the author of Moving beyond the Mass Exodus Tax Flight Myth and many other EPI reports, Alan is an expert on the state budget and tax policy.
