Event Details
Please join Senator Tiara Mack, co-chair of the Rhode Island Black, Latino, Indigenous, Asian American and Pacific Islander (RIBLIA) Caucus, and the Revenue for Rhode Islanders Coalition for a Community Teach-In at Hope High School, on Wednesday, April 23, at 7 PM.
Senator Mack will be speaking about the urgency of enacting one of the most important bills in the 2025 session of the RI General Assembly: HB-5473 (Rep. Karen Alzate) and its Senate counterpart SB-329 (Sen. Melissa Murray). The bill would establish a new 3% surtax for the Top 1% of filers on their taxable income above $625,000.
With more inequity and cuts descending on us from Washington, Rhode Island must take care of our own by increasing tax fairness and raising revenue. Establishing this modest surtax on our wealthiest neighbors — for example, a RI household with income of $650,000 would pay only $750 more in taxes than it currently pays — will allow us to shore up vital programs and invest in childcare, food assistance, education, senior services, and public transit while simultaneously allowing us to better support and grow our small businesses and economy.
